On this hike along the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg between Thale and Treseburg, you pass through the most significant rocky valley north of the Alps, which has also captivated renowned poets such as Goethe, Kloppstock, Heine, Eichendorff, and Fontane. The idyllic towns of Treseburg and Altenbrak are former hut sites. Wendefurth is located in close proximity to the Rappbode reservoir with the highest dam in Germany.
The starting point of this hike is the central hiking meeting point at Bodetal Information Thale. From here you enter the Bodetal, always following the 'Hexe' mark and blue triangle upstream. Across the Devil’s Bridge, past the Bode basin and over the sun cliffs, after about eight kilometers you will reach the Bodetal Information Treseburg.
From here, crossing the main street straight ahead, follow the signs to Altenbrak with the already mentioned marking. Past Hotel Bodeblick and the Falken cliffs, you reach the outskirts of Altenbrak. Between the 'Jägerbaude' tavern and the Harzresidenz guesthouse, the hiking trail runs over Osterberg to the large parking lot of Altenbrak.
From here, following the mentioned marking again, the hiking trail leads past historic old mining structures, a historic water bridge, and a trout breeding facility before you reach the town of Wendefurth. Crossing federal highway 81, you arrive at the Wendefurther Reservoir.
In winter, the hiking trail from Thale to Treseburg through the Bodetal is closed due to icy conditions.
Follow A36 towards Thale until the Thale/Friedrichsbrunn/Westerhausen exit, continue via L240 via Warnstedt to Thale. In Thale, drive towards Bodetal to the parking lot for lifts to Rosstrappe.
