As the days grow shorter and the first snow falls, enchanting Christmas markets across the Harz Mountains open up and transform the small mountain towns into a sparkling winter wonderland.
The magic of Christmas comes to the Harz. From a Christmas forest in the middle of a romantic town, a historical Christmas market within a castle courtyard or underground in a mine, many magical Christmas markets await you in the Harz Mountains. When the atmospheric sight of thousands of lights illuminate colorful half-timbered facades in historic towns; the smell of mulled wine, pine needles and almonds wafting through the winding streets and the sounds of Christmas cheer can be heard; then starts arguably the best season in the Harz Mountains.
Christmas and winter markets
We would like to present you a small flavor of Christmas; more details on all events will be listed prior to the advent season. One of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany is located in Goslar. This charming town is lit up by tens of thousands of lights which adorn the 50 large Christmas trees and the 80 stalls that offer food and traditional crafts making it the perfect place for Christmas shopping.
The picturesque half-timbered UNESCO town of Quedlinburg in addition to the Christmas market has a special, “Advent in the court“ where around 20 houses in the historic old town open their courtyards on the first, second and third Advent weekend to artisans and craftsmen.
Nordhausen Christmas market is nestled between wooden houses decoratively lit up offering excellent Christmas shopping.
