Westerhäuser Käsehof

Short facts

  • Thale OT Westerhausen

Tasty cheese made with care by hand.

What started small 14 years ago with Mathilde the goat is now a family farm specializing in cheese production. Peter Gropengießer's goat herd numbers around 40 goats - mainly brown Harz goats - and one Harz billy goat. From spring to fall, the herd spends every day in the surrounding meadows. As he breeds his own goats, cheese production from goat's milk is stopped for a while in spring, as the milk is then reserved for the newborn lambs. There is also a herd of Harz red cattle, which he also breeds himself. Although the milk yield of this breed is not so high, the good feed - hay and green fodder - ensures high-quality and tasty milk. Cheese production is 100% handmade.

For several years now, the farm has been working according to the DE-ÖKO-006 organic guidelines.

The following products have been awarded the "Typisch Harz" regional brand:
  • Cow and goat's milk cheese
The Typisch Harz story of the Westerhäuser Käsehof tells how a small family farm grew from a goat and a vacation.
