Langenstein-Zwieberge Memorial

Short facts

  • Halberstadt OT Langenstein

The Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Langenstein-Zwieberge commemorates the thousands of prisoners who were forced to dig tunnels in the mountains under inhuman conditions.

In 1949, a first memorial was inaugurated at the site of the mass graves. The cemetery has been redesigned several times and since 2011 it has been possible to commemorate the victims buried there individually by attaching name plaques. The memorial today comprises the former camp site with structural remains and the mass graves, an administration and exhibition building and allows access to 120 metres of the tunnel system.
To this day, the memorial's work is largely influenced by the internationality of the prisoners. Their descendants have come together to form a group which is probably unique in Germany, the international "Gruppe der zweiten Generation" (second generation group). The group is deeply involved in various aspects of the commemorative activities.
