St. Stephani Church

Short facts

  • Osterwieck

The St. Stephanikirche in Osterwieck is a monument to the Christian mission in the North Harz region, as well as a monument to Romanesque, late Gothic and early Protestant church construction.

Situated on the Romanesque Road, it impresses numerous visitors every day with its different styles and experienceable construction phases. The distinctive towers that can be seen from afar have been towering more than 50 metres into the sky for almost 9 centuries. After the nave was severely damaged by floods in 1495, the choir was renovated by 1516 in the late Gothic style. In the middle of the 16th century, triggered by the Reformation, the nave was rebuilt to create an impressive hall church. As this makes the building one of the first Protestant church buildings in the world, the spirit of the Renaissance still lives on in the late Gothic room.
