Wasserburg Zilly

Short facts

  • Zilly

Counts of Wernigerode built the castle at the beginning of the 14th century.

The 30 x 30 m core castle with the fortified west wing designed as a commercial, residential and representative building, a tower, keep, gatehouse and farm buildings as well as the outer bailey measuring approx. 100 x 70 m with a further tower were built in several construction phases. Under the direction of the Halberstadt cathedral dean Matthias von Oppen, the estate was developed into a large agricultural estate at the beginning of the 17th century. The Bunte Stube (colorful room) was furnished with large wall paintings from the late Renaissance, which today serves as a wedding room. The Knights' Hall comprises 27 x 9 m of unobstructed interior space. Members of the association organize guided tours of the castle. Exhibitions and events are regularly held at the castle.
