Short facts

  • Goslar OT Vienenburg

Proud, steely, gigantic ... since 1996, six huge iron steles have stood on the reopened Vienenburg-Ilsenburg rail link.

They are reminiscent of segments of the Berlin Wall and bring back memories of Germany's recent past for travelers. The sculptures are part of the installation "Dissolving the Iron Curtain", which attracts attention between Vienenburg (Lower Saxony) and Abbenrode (Saxony-Anhalt). With this rust-covered monument, artist Claus Christian Wenzel wants to commemorate the disappearance of the once insurmountable border. Four further steel elements are lined up along the former border line to the village of Abbenrode. The distance between them is doubled. The row seems to dissolve at the end - just as the former border fence disappears without a trace into nowhere in many places.
