Kloster Grauhof

Short facts

  • Goslar

This type of collegiate church is unique in northern Germany.

The former Augustinian canons' monastery Grauhof was begun in 1701 and the collegiate church of St. Georg was built between 1711 and 1714. The three-bay pilaster church with its elongated raised choir impresses with the unusual spaciousness of the baroque church. After secularization, the canons' convent was dissolved. In 1818, Grauhof, including the monastery estate, which now belonged to the Kingdom of Hanover, was assigned to the General Hanoverian Monastery Fund. On the west gallery is the important baroque organ built by Magdeburg organ builder Christoph Treutmann in 1737, which attracts organists from all over the world due to its special sound quality and has already been featured on over 40 CD recordings by renowned artists. It is the only work by Treutmann the Elder that is still almost completely preserved today and is one of the largest and most beautiful baroque organs in northern Germany.

The Grauhof Monastery is open to visitors on Sundays and public holidays from 3 to 5 pm. Visits outside opening hours and guided tours are possible. A donation is requested.
