Neuwerkkirche Goslar

Short facts

  • Goslar

The Neuwerkkiche in Goslar is one of the most important Romanesque churches in the Harz Mountains.

The former convent church of the Cistercian nunnery founded in the 12th century is a three-aisled cruciform basilica with a 46-metre-high westwork and is one of the most important Romanesque churches in the Harz Mountains. The fact that all of its architectural parts are still in the condition in which they were built makes it a rarity in northern Germany, as it took at least 100 years to build. Founded by the then imperial bailiff Volkmar and his wife Helena as the collegiate church "St. Maria in horto" (Holy Mary in the Rose Garden), it became the center of a monastery with a formative influence in Goslar even after the Reformation. The church's altar was consecrated in 1186 by Bishop Adelog von Hildesheim. In 1188, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa took the monastery under his protection. In the 13th century, the monastery reached an economic and cultural heyday. The precious murals were probably painted around 1225. Today, the Neuwerkkirche serves as a Protestant parish church.

The church is open from March to October (incl.): Monday - Friday from 10.00 - 16.30. In the winter months, the church can only be visited after church services or by arrangement with the parish office. Groups can visit the church all year round by making an appointment with the parish office.
