At the outskirts of Wolperode, we hike to the sports field Ackenhausen. In front of the sports facilities, a narrow path leads first, then a field path into the village. After the church, turn right on the street “An der Wanne” up to the forest edge. Here we keep left and walk a long stretch without turning through the forest uphill. Passing a barrier, we stay on the forest road to the next major intersection. There, the red-white trail markers and an old signpost (Mechtshausen) guide us left downhill to a turning area. From here, turn left and continue until sharply turning left again to reach the fields of Brunshäuser Hai. Passing an information board, turn left at the next intersection and follow a forest path first gently uphill along the old border, later steeply downhill keeping right to the forest edge and further downhill to Mechtshausen. Trail markers lead through the village, past the cemetery, back up to the forest edge. There, turn left, cross a field path, keep left at the following fork and follow the path. Attention! At the next fork, be sure to turn left again and continue the path to the Adenhausen cemetery. From there, turn right, uphill through the forest to the Wohlenstein ruins. Then down a forest path to the Bilderlahe hiking parking lot. From here, right into the forest and follow the forest road in long curves back up to the upper forest edge, then continue right to the Heber settlement. After the hamlet, the path crosses L 489, passes the reservoir, and soon reaches a shelter above Wolperode. From here, it's just a 'cat's jump' back to our starting point.
