Hohnstein Castle ruins

Short facts

  • Harztor OT Neustadt

The 900-year-old ruins of Burg Hohnstein are surrounded by mixed forests in the southern Harz Mountains and tower above Neustadt.

The castle was built around 1200 by Konrad von Sangerhausen as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Hohnstein. Unfortunately the castle was destroyed by fire during the Thirty Years' War. Today, the castle ruins are in very good condition again after years of clean-up and restoration work. The Burggasthof (Castle Inn) was extensively renovated in 2001 and is now open to guests again. The castle terrace offers probably the most beautiful view of the southern Harz Mountains. The Burggasthof is a popular starting point for hikers and mountain bikers.
