Next to the Schlossberg refuge, Scharzfels Castle rises up on a high dolomite rock. The ruins still bear witness to the once mighty castle from the 12th century.
The castle was the seat of the Counts of Scharzfels, the Principality of Grubenhagen and the Counts of Hohnstein, among others. Due to its location in the rock, it was considered impregnable for a long time. It survived both the Peasants' War and the Thirty Years' War. Scharzfels Castle reached its peak in the 17th century, when it was converted into a fortress and state prison.
During the Seven Years' War, the castle was destroyed by French troops. Restoration work only began in the mid-19th century. Above all, the corridors and chambers carved into the rock have been preserved. The viewing platforms on the Scharzfels offer a spectacular view of the southern Harz foreland.
