Outbound via the “Taubenstieg”
From the "Unter den Eichen" car park, we walk to the opposite end of its entrance and keep left. Here begins the Taubenstieg (Harzklub hiking trail 2G,2F, blue dot) with a short steep ascent. Looking down into the valley, views open repeatedly over the Granetalsperre reservoir to the Harz foothills. Many resting benches are set up at various points. When the path splits after about 1.5 km, we keep right and stay at the same height. After a long left bend (500 m) we meet a forest road, which we follow for about 100 m in the walking direction. A path branches off to the right, down the slope. Attention, this junction can be easily missed as it quickly grows over with vegetation from the path edge. From the Margareten cliffs there is a good overview of the now narrow Grane valley.
A few meters further on, you can choose to go right downhill to return via the "Upper Cliffs Path" or continue almost parallel to the slope to reach the Granetal. We want to go to the Granetal and walk gently downhill, then later gently uphill again.
Follow the slope-parallel forest path, cross a forest road and continue further downhill on the path until you reach a T-junction of forest roads from above. We follow the forest road, which goes downhill in a right turn. After a few steps, it reaches the Grane road. A few meters upstream there is a seating area on the Grane inviting you to rest. We continue the return journey downstream until we reach the Granerundweg. We follow it to the right and leave it after about 300 m, then continue on the "Lower Cliffs Path" which leads us directly back to the starting point.
