The starting point of the hike is the stave church in Hahnenklee. At the long stairway to the church, a signpost points towards Festenburg with "5G blue cross." You follow this and come directly onto the Schalker Grabenweg, which leads you over the dam of the Middle Grumbach Pond. You continue hiking towards Clausthal Zellerfeld through the spruce forest, crossing the L 516 until the path brings you to the B241. From the parking lot, you cross the street and ascend diagonally across into the hiking path "5 G Blue Cross" again. On the narrow forest path, you pass the Large Kellerhalsteich, stroll over the dam, and behind the pond, a bit uphill, you finally meet the Upper Schalker Graben. This path runs to the right, along the southern slope of the Kahlen Berg. You follow the trail to a small bridge and continue straight into the forest, passing the so-called Lochstein (stamp station 126). Shortly before Festenburg, you leave the Schalker Graben and hike down the hill to the forest inn Grüne Tanne. You pass through the courtyard of the inn, at the end of which the hiking path "5J blue dot" begins. This steadily ascending path leads you to the 762-meter-high Schalke (stamp station 125). Downhill, you use the access road "5D green triangle" to the Auerhahn. Then, you cross the federal highway B241 and reach the Upper Auerhahnweg, a wide forest road (1E red dot in a triangle), on which you return to Hahnenklee-Bockswiese and the stave church.
