Münzenbergmuseum - das Marienkloster auf dem Münzenberg

Short facts

  • Quedlinburg

Despite its smaller dimensions, it is one of the most important Ottonian buildings in the city, along with the collegiate church on the Schlossberg and St. Wiperti.

The impressive remains of St. Mary's Church on the Münzenberg in Quedlinburg still show all the elements of an Ottonian basilica with apse, transept, three-aisled nave and west building. Built in 986 with the founding of the Benedictine convent, it existed until 1536 and was used for secular purposes in the following centuries, with twelve residential buildings built over and around it.

The preserved parts of the building, numerous finds of half-columns, capitals and reliefs from St. Mary's convey a vivid picture of medieval architecture.

The west crypt, the east crypt, parts of the central and side aisles, the nuns' gallery and the archaeologically excavated medieval burial site in front of the south aisle  can be visited.

On a private initiative, the preserved parts of the monastery church were made accessible and in 2006 the site was transferred to the German Foundation for Monument Protection as the "Monastery Church of St. Mary on the Münzenberg" trust foundation and operated by a museum association. The German Foundation for Monument Protection manages and supports the maintenance and expansion of the museum from the proceeds of the foundation's assets and donations.
