The "Alte Münze" is one of the most magnificent and oldest half-timbered houses in the town of Stolberg.
The building at Niedergasse 19 houses a unique, fully preserved historic coin workshop from the 18th century on the first floor. The silver of the mountains was turned into coveted money thousands of times over. Original punches, old coins and changing exhibitions convey a vivid picture of coin production. The exhibitions on the two upper floors trace the history of money from the minting of coins in the Harz Mountains to the everyday life of a mint master and digital currencies. The time of the Reformation and the Peasants' War and their consequences for the everyday life of the population as well as the role of the Stolberg-born theologian and reformer Thomas Müntzer are also highlighted.
