World Heritage Knowledge Trail in Zellerfeld: Learn about the great scientist Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and his technical ideas at 12 themed stations.
This circular route is 3.6 kilometers long and takes you through Zellerfeld to the fantastic Upper Harz Water Management system. It is today part of the UNESCO World Heritage in the Harz.
The water from the ponds was brought by ditches to the water wheels in the mines. The water power was needed to bring the mined ores upwards.
Rainwater also repeatedly seeped into the mines. The water wheels helped to pump the seeped water out of the mine.
The World Heritage Knowledge Trail has various stations. At each station, a sign tells something about the scientist Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646 - 1716) and his work. He worked in the Upper Harz from 1680 to 1686 and from 1693 to 1696. During this time, he conducted many experiments. His goal was to save energy from water power or even to generate energy completely without water.
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was a brilliant scientist. His letters are today also part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage. They show what great inventors people can be.
Note: The route takes about 1.5 hours if you read all the signs.
