There is a lot to see on this route: Schäferhof Schützenplatz Waldhalle Langenstein Zwieberge Memorial Functional building of the memorial The path of suffering Fuchsklippe The Glass Monk The Country House Old shooting range Lost water
Interesting things to discover on the route:
- Schäferhof
Old manor from the Thuringian period (5th century). Later used as a sheep farm. Stones from Altenburg were probably used for construction. Thoroughly restored after 1990. - Schützenplatz
On the meadow orchard stands the shooting house. The Langenstein shooting club was founded in 1817. Originally, shooting was done from the window of the shooting house onto the concrete base. - Waldhalle
Here stood the forester's house. In the summer months, hikers could stop here. It was an additional source of income for the forester. The building had its own well. - Langenstein Zwieberge Memorial
In 1944, the Nazi regime planned to move weapons production under the Thekenberge. Prisoners from Buchenwald concentration camp were brought here for this purpose. The construction of the underground facility was never completed. About 6000 people died under inhumane conditions. The memorial was established in their memory. - Functional building of the memorial
Seat of the memorial administration. Events are held in the building. An exhibition on the history of the Langenstein Zwieberge concentration camp can be visited. - The path of suffering
On the path of suffering of the prisoners, it goes to the Thekenberge. Prisoners built 13 km of tunnels in the mountain. Every day, they had to walk this path back and forth to work. - Fuchsklippe
Sandstone formation in the Thekenberge. It may be an old cult site from which the starry sky was observed. The distinctive rock incision may be related to observing the sun's position. - The Glass Monk
Ancient cult site of the early Germanic peoples – archaeological finds suggest this. In popular tradition, it was still commonly called Donarfelsen for a long time. According to legend, a monk and a nun sinned and were turned to stone as a result. - The Country House
Former excursion inn, operated until 1991. Last used as a holiday camp. In 1944, the first prisoners for Langenstein Zwieberge were housed here. - Old shooting range
Halberstadt was a garrison town during the imperial era. This shooting range was built before World War I. Concrete elements in the forest indicate the shooting lanes. The facility was no longer used after World War I. - Lost water
Under the characteristic sandstone layers is also shell limestone. Limestone tends to karst. The Lost Water is a karst spring. The water flows under the southwest side of the Hoppelberg, emerges again here to the surface, flows about 500 m above ground, then disappears again near the country house.
