There is a lot to see on this route: Schäferhof Schützenplatz Waldhalle Langenstein Zwieberge Memorial Functional building of the memorial The Path of Suffering Fuchsklippe The Glass Monk The Country House Old Shooting Range Lost Water

Interesting things to discover on the route:

  1. Schäferhof
Old manor from the Thuringian period (5th century). Later used as a shepherd's farm. Probably stones from Altenburg were used for construction. Fully restored after 1990.
  2. Schützenplatz
On the meadow orchard stands the shooting house. The Langenstein shooting club was founded in 1817. Originally, shooting took place through the window of the shooting house at the concrete base.
  3. Waldhalle
Here stood the forester's house. In the summer months, hikers could stop here. For the forester, it was an additional source of income. The building had its own well.
  4. Langenstein Zwieberge Memorial
In 1944, the Nazi regime intended to move armament production to under the Thekenberge. Prisoners from Buchenwald concentration camp were brought here. The construction of the underground facility was not completed. About 6,000 people died due to the inhumane conditions. The memorial was built in their memory.
  5. Functional building of the memorial
Seat of the memorial's administration. Events take place in the building. An exhibition on the history of the Langenstein Zwieberge concentration camp can be visited.
  6. The Path of Suffering
On the path of suffering of the prisoners, it leads to the Thekenberge. Prisoners built 13 km of tunnels in the mountain. Every day, prisoners had to walk this path to and from work.
  7. Fuchsklippe
Sandstone formation in the Thekenberge. It could be an old cult site from which the starry sky was observed. The distinctive rock cut might be related to observing the position of the sun.
  8. The Glass Monk
Old cult site of the ancient Germans - archaeological finds suggest this. In popular tradition, it was long called Donarfelsen. According to legend, a monk and a nun sinned and were turned to stone.
  9. The Country House
Former excursion guesthouse, which was operated until 1991. It was last used as a holiday camp. In 1944, the first prisoners for Langenstein Zwieberge were housed here.
  10. Old Shooting Range
Halberstadt was a garrison town in the imperial era. This shooting range was built before World War I. The concrete elements in the forest indicate the shooting lanes. After World War I, the facility was no longer used.
  11. Lost Water
Under the characteristic sandstone layers is also shell limestone. Limestone tends to karstify. Lost Water is a karst spring. The water flows under the southwestern side of Hoppelberg, emerges here, flows about 500 m above ground, then disappears again near the Country House.
