You start your route at the Ölmühlenteich. Follow the sign "Ascent to Altenburg" up the stone steps. Here you will already see the first cave dwellings. The ascent continues along an old "cart track." Along this path, you can repeatedly see remnants of the cave dwellings. The first stop is at the cave dwellings near Altenburg. Directly opposite is a small viewing plateau. You simply have to capture this view.
The hike then continues straight ahead to the remains of Altenburg over the old castle ditches. A breathtaking panoramic view awaits you at the second stop at Altenburg. From there, discover Regenstein, Brocken, Halberstadt, Huy, and of course Langenstein.
Now there are two descent options. The first leads back down the stairs from Altenburg, or you walk back a bit and choose the signed path around Altenburg (left). You then go through the old castle ditch and return to the hiking trail. This one is special. The rocky, stepped ground is reminiscent of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. At the junction, follow the Hoppelberg sign. Past the cherry plantation, you will find Siemensstein on the left. About 15 meters further, a bench invites you to rest. Enjoy the picturesque view of Brocken here.
Hike further here over the forest floor to a fork. Keep left there. This slightly ascending path leads you directly to Opferstein, which you will find on the right on a hill in the forest. Back on the main path, you can take the steeper ridge path to the left or stay on the main path to the right. We follow the main path to a blue-framed sign on the left. Here the Hoppelnase is described, and you can hike it and discover a lot.
Our path leads us back to the main path. Downhill, you will discover another stone. This is called the "Frog Stone" by the locals. A small forest path first takes us downhill, then uphill again. On the left halfway up the small hill, you will find Sonnentorstein. This seems somewhat inconspicuous but still mystical. After another small ascent comes a steep descent. Follow this natural path to the main trail. Keep left until a fork. Also hold left here again. You reach a wide downhill gravel path. At the edge of the forest is a barrier and an information board about the Hoppelberge.
Along the forest edge, the path leads us to Apfelweg in Langenstein. Then continue right on the Hoppelbergweg, past the Schützenhaus to the end of the street. You then reach Quedlinburger Straße. Follow this until the sign: Ascent to cave dwellings. Here you find the unique buildings from an old time. Massive doors set into the rock face, windows with white curtains, and tiny gardens with kitchen herbs still remind us today of the lives of their former inhabitants. Sometimes it even seems as if a hobbit from a Tolkien novel might stumble through the door at any moment. Here you can get a cultural and hiking stamp ~In the Shadow of the Witches~. You find another stamp if your route then leads to the Landhotel Schäferhof. You reach this by walking back a bit and following the main street to the right. After a few meters, you reach your destination. Here you can stop for refreshment or continue until the sharp right turn. Cross the main street. Past the kindergarten, you reach Dorfstraße and then the starting point of our hike.
