Bad Frankenhausen Regional Museum

Short facts

  • Bad Frankenhausen

The former residence of the Schwarzburg family now houses the regional museum as well as the Bad Frankenhausen tourist information office.

The Regional Museum in Bad Frankenhausen, located in the former royal palace that once belonged to the Counts of Schwarzburg, presents a diverse exhibition on the region’s cultural history and the unique features of the Kyffhäuser’s flora, fauna, and geology. The exhibition traces the geological development of this unique landscape, from its earliest settlement through the Middle Ages including the decisive battle of the Peasants’ War to the emergence of the spa industry. For example, visitors learn that salt is inextricably linked to the history of Bad Frankenhausen. The saltworks are first mentioned in a document from the year 998 the saline springs thus shaped the development of Frankenhausen from an early stage, and in the 16th century, the town became wealthy thanks to this valuable raw material. Since the 19th century, the town has harnessed the healing powers of the brine springs and established the spa industry.
