Lutherbrunnen Mansfeld

Short facts

  • Stadt Mansfeld

Martin Luther spent his childhood in Mansfeld. The Luther Fountain, an Art Nouveau monument by the artist Paul Juckhoff, was erected in the town in his honor in 1913.

The monument, whose pedestal also serves as a fountain, has stood in the heart of the town of Mansfeld since 1913 on the square also named after Martin Luther. The three bronze reliefs, designed in Art Nouveau style and reflecting three stages of Luther's life, are impressive. The front, entitled "OUT INTO THE WORLD", shows Luther as a 13-year-old boy leaving his parents' house and home. Incidentally, this is the only existing sculptural depiction of Martin Luther as a child. The second bronze plaque is dedicated to one of the most important scenes in German history, the posting of the theses on the door of the castle church in Wittenberg. The caption reads "INTO THE FIGHT". The third bronze plate, entitled "HINDURCH ZUM SIEG", depicts Luther in front of the Imperial Diet in Worms. Above the first plate, two additional reliefs depict Martin Luther's parents. The monument is crowned by the statue of St. George, the patron saint of the city and the county.

With its unusual design, the Luther Fountain in Mansfeld clearly stands out from other monuments in honor of the reformer. This is not least due to the work of sculptor Paul Juckhoff, who has come up with something very special here.

Visitors can experience a special highlight in the calendar of events every year on the weekend after Easter. This is when Martin Luther's ceremonial historical school enrolment is re-enacted here, accompanied by a colorful stage program, cheerful market activities and background music. If you would like to find out more about the Luther Fountain and Martin Luther's childhood in Mansfeld, then you should take part in a guided tour of the town. This is the best way to discover traces of the past and immerse yourself in the historical atmosphere of the town.
