Landscape Park Spiegelsberge

Short facts

  • Halberstadt

One of the earliest landscape gardens in Germany can be found near Halberstadt; it is also one of the most original.

The park was laid out by Ernst Ludwig Christoph Spiegel zum Diesenberg, who was close to the cultural circle around the poet Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim (1719-1803). The enlightenment of its creator is reflected in the many meaningful allusions of the garden staffages and building complexes such as the Belvedere. The park is popular for its beautiful views, among other things, and was opened to the public by Spiegel as long ago as 1771. Other attractions for young and old include the world's oldest and largest preserved giant wine barrel in the hunting lodge, the zoo and sandstone caves nearby.
