Sondershausen

Music at its heart

Music and mining are living traditions in Sondershausen - the cultural town in the southern Harz Kyffhäuser region!

Sondershausen, which is located south of the Harz Mountains, is an attractive destination for anyone who likes culture and nature. A lovingly renovated town centre, a residential castle in the middle of the town, music events and festivals are just a selection of what awaits visitors. The biggest highlight is the Thüringer Schlossfestspiele Sondershausen, which has established itself as the most popular open-air festival in the Thuringia - Lower Saxony - Saxony-Anhalt triangle.

The Schlossfestspiele are musical theatre with gripping production values, set against a magical backdrop of the historical ambience of the former residence of the Schwarzburg-Sondershausen princes, a castle that harmoniously combines every architectural style from Renaissance to Historicism and boasts an extensive museum and the Goldende Kutsche (golden carriage).

The "Possen" with the highest half-timbered tower in Europe and the Straussberg with the Affenwald (monkey forest) and summer toboggan run invite you to enjoy nature and adventure. In the "Glückauf" (Good Luck) adventure mine you can enjoy a 700 m deep ride through the salt rock and a boat ride on the saltwater lake. You can also enjoy listening to music in the deepest concert hall in the world!
