Experience the Sondershausen Mine

Short facts

  • Sondershausen

Accompanied by expert miners, an exciting journey takes you through this unique mine.

First you will be given a safety helmet and a protective gown in the opencast chaw (changing room) and then be briefed on what you need to do when you're underground. Afterwards the tour goes down from the pit bank in the pit cage to a depth of 670 m. Once in the mine, you will be taken about 10 km along a long stretch of cavities in an open pit truck. The tour of the steam engine, which is over 100 years old, is supplemented by an above-ground exhibition, which also includes a model shaft. If they want to, adventurous visitors can also try out the salt slide underground. The boat trip on an underground salt lake is a less nerve-racking experience. The mine also has a festival hall for about 60 people and a concert hall with 340 seats.
