The small mining town of Lautenthal, which is over 800 years old, is a state-recognised climatic health resort and lies in the romantic Innerste valley, surrounded by magnificent mixed forests and green mountain meadows. Here, hiking enthusiasts, nature lovers and those seeking recreation can experience the pristine nature of the Harz Mountains up close. A network of hiking trails over 200 km long leads visitors through unspoilt natural landscapes, along crystal-clear streams, across flowering mountain meadows and through the fresh coolness of the coniferous and deciduous forests. On guided hikes, such as the tour of herbs or the evening and torchlight tour, you can learn interesting facts about the Harz Mountains and its nature.
The 'Lautenthals Glück' mining museum is one of the oldest mines in the Upper Harz region that is still open to visitors and provides an insight into Lautenthal's mining history. In mine trains, visitors descend to the main shaft, the underground St Barbara's Chapel, the drilling site, the old workings and other mining stations. In the approx. 450-year-old water solution of the silver mine, the ore barge in the mine is reconstructed on a journey of about 150 metres. The romantic ore barge harbour, also called "Venice underground", is the venue for underground celebrations and events.
The brewery museum is also worth a visit. In a half-timbered house decorated with intricate carvings, visitors gain an insight into the brewers' work in the brewery rooms.
The Innerste reservoir, just a few minutes from Lautenthal, offers a wide range of water sports and leisure activities, including swimming, sailing, surfing, rowing, fishing and pedal boating. The promenade along the dam invites you to sunbathe, inline skate, jog or cycle. The campsite, located on a headland, is a great way to enjoy a holiday near the reservoir. Visitors who enjoy hiking have the opportunity to discover the Innerste reservoir and its surroundings on the hiking route "Around the Innerste reservoir". Located in the forest, a lido with beach volleyball facilities, a trim trail and the access to the mountain bike trail network of the Volksbank Arena Harz offer further interesting opportunities to get active in Lautenthal.
In winter, the small mining town welcomes its guests with a well-maintained network of cross-country ski trails, various toboggan slopes and the opportunity to hike through the snow-covered landscape.
