Wernigerode Castle

Short facts

Fairytale castle or haunted castle? One might say that this beautifully situated castle, mysteriously changes its appearance with the weather!

Harz without Wernigerode Castle® - then I wasn't there. The first castle was built around 1110, the oldest preserved parts date back to the 14th/15th century. It was remodelled in the late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Between 1862 and 1885, the complex was finally extended by the Blankenburg master builder Carl Frühling to create a complete work of art in the historicist style. In the residential palace, the originally furnished rooms of the high nobility from the time before the First World War can be visited. Thematically designed halls explain the cultural, intellectual and social history of the 19th century. In addition, high-calibre special exhibitions on the cultural and art history of the 19th century are held, the history of the entire Harz region and special artistic aspects in the special exhibition rooms.

Podcast "The Harz behind the scenes" with Katrin Dziekan, the castle's curator, about Wernigerode Castle as a film set.
