The castle is one of the few surviving buildings from the early High Middle Ages.
Stiege lies in a diverse landscape with mountain meadows, wild forests and its two tranquil lakes. This impressive view is best enjoyed from Stiege Castle, which stands majestically high up on the mountain, visible from afar. The castle was probably built as a hunting lodge or as a resting place for people crossing the Harz Mountains during the reign of Henry I around 919. It was later rebuilt, fortified and extended by the Counts of Blankenburg-Reinstein to become a count's residence and manor house.
Today, the old walls house a cosy castle café with home-baked cakes, a terrace and beer cellar, a small store with home decor ideas and a large, comfortable vacation apartment.
In the immediate vicinity of the castle is the Stieger wooden church "Zur Hilfe Gottes" with its restored Herzog lodge and "Engelhardt organ".
