Ring der Erinnerung

Short facts

  • Oberharz am Brocken OT Sorge

Hiking through the forest near Sorge ... you can already see the "Ring of Remembrance" from afar.

In 1993, landscape artist Hermann Prigann created a circular wall of piled-up deadwood logs for this natural monument. The ring with a diameter of 70 meters lies directly on the former death strip, with the former border running right through it. Inside the circle, five pillars of the old border fence protrude from the ground as a reminder. Over the years, the dead wood collapses and rots. But at the same time, new life emerges: New shoots sprout from the seemingly dead material and fill the ring with fresh greenery. Past and future, growth and decay - a cycle that also symbolizes how inexorable and equally transient borders are.
