Clausthal-Zellerfeld

The lively mining town

The health resort of Clausthal-Zellerfeld is the only university town in the Harz Mountains and is situated 535 to 600 meters above sea level, on a plateau between Goslar and Altenau in the Upper Harz region. Clausthal-Zellerfeld combines the tradition of a mining town with the attractions of a university town, creating a wonderful combination of tradition and modernity.

Clausthal-Zellerfeld is a popular holiday destination for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts due to the fascinating mountain landscape, flowering meadows, green forests and crystal clear mountain waters, with more than 60 ponds, ditches and streams, which form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Harz Water Management.

With a well-marked network of hiking trails, access to the mountain-bike trails of the Volksbank Arena Harz, plus several Nordic Walking routes and the opportunity for fishing or swimming in some of the mountain lakes, there is something for everyone in Clausthal-Zellerfeld.

Many distinctive buildings and the historic town centre with its large market square, which has been preserved to this day, and the St. Salvatoris Church in its centre, framed by old burghers' and miners' houses in wide and leafy streets, bear witness to the former importance of the mining town.

A comprehensive insight into this important mining past is provided by the 'Oberharzer Bergwerkmuseum' (Upper Harz Mining Museum), the Kaiser Wilhelm II Shaft technology monument, the above-ground facilities of the Ottiliae Shaft with its day-lift railway and the geo-collection of the Clausthal University of Technology.

Other attractions in Clausthal Zellerfeld include one of the largest wooden churches in the world, the Market Church of the Holy Spirit, and the the arts and crafts yard 'Alte Münze' ('Kunsthandwerkerhof').

In winter, the snow-covered town awaits its visitors with a well-marked network of cross-country ski trails and a small toboggan run in Zellerfeld. For more information on winter sports in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, please visit wintersport.harzinfo.de
