The elevation of the former independant mining town of Altenau and the district of Torfhaus varies between 420 to 928 metres.
Herbs and spices have played a central role in Altenau since the opening of Europe's Largest Herb and Spice Park. Special planted herb displays known as "Würzeln"© can be found around town and characterise the cityscape. The herb park invites you on a journey for all senses, with its many domestic and exotic herbs and spices.
The Crystal Therme Heisser Brocken in the health resort Altenau is another highlight. Relax in the various indoor and outdoor heated pools. The sauna area reflects the theme of "herbs and spices". Especially created infusions of herbs from the herbal park promise a very special experience.
Hikers will enjoy the beautiful landscape around Altenau, for example, on an extended tour along the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg trail, or the Goethe Way through the unspoilt nature leading to the Brocken summit.
Mountain bikers can choose from the vast network of trails belonging to the Volksbank Arena Harz, while Nordic walkers will find three routes of varying levels of difficulty at the "DSV Nordic Active Walking Zentrum”.
In winter, the high-altitude district of Torfhaus at 800 meters has much to offer. You will find several cross-country ski-trails and winter hiking trails passing through the snowy landscape. Also with the ski facilities and well groomed slopes for skiers and snowboarders, plus a very useful sledge lift, every winter sports fan will have plenty of fun.
