The small village Zorge, which is located in an open southwards valley in the South Harz, belongs to the Municipality Walkenried and is surrounded by mixed and beech forests.

  • Kurpark in Zorge

Shaped by many centuries of mining and smelting works, Zorge presents itself as an officially recognized health resort with nice half-timbered houses, a lovingly restored centre and an idyllic spa park with walkway.

Surrounded by nature and located directly at the Harzer BaudenSteig, which leads from Bad Grund to Walkenried, Zorge offers well maintained and marked hiking trails so that visitors have many opportunities to discover the mixed forests typical for the South Harz.

Zorge is known as the “birthplace” of the first steam locomotive of German manufacturing and experienced its greatest economic boom in the middle of the 19th century. Memorabilia from that period can be found in the local museum and in the centre of Zorge, showing both a model of the first locomotive in original size and a Normag Tractor of local production.

Another attraction of the village is the Spirits Manufactory Hammerschmiede, which is the smallest of its kind in the Harz. A tour through the manufactory gives the visitors an understanding of the production techniques of the distillery and presents the results of the work by means of a tasting.

On hot summer days, the Zorge Forest Lido provides cool refreshments. The bathing paradise offers three swimming areas and a large lawn for sunbathing, thus ensuring recreational fun for young and old.
