The small health resort of Altenbrak is a district of Thale, surrounded by green mountains meadows and magnificent forests. It is situated in a sunny yet sheltered location near the Rappbode Dam in the Bode Valley.

Since 1951, a particular highlight of the town has been its open-air stage in the middle of the forest, which is located on the eastern edge of Altenbrak. This natural hillside stage in the style of an ancient amphitheatre can accommodate 850 visitors and is popular, especially in the summer, as a venue for numerous cultural events like music festivals and theatre performances.
The local Altenbrak History Museum has displays of historic regional traditions based on household and farm tools, old national costumes, everyday objects and interesting photographs.
