Bad Gandersheim

welcome to the town of Roswitha

The officially recognized saltwater spa town Bad Gandersheim lies on the western edge of the Harz. The town dates back to 852 as part of the Saxon Kingdom and original homeland of the Ottoman Imperial family and the first German poetess "Roswitha", who became known far beyond the borders of Lower Saxony.

The abbey buildings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods and the historic market square with its half-timber houses and the imposing Romanesque church are worth visiting.

The impressive permanent exhibition at the Portal zur Geschichte (Gateway to History Museum), focuses on the history of the town and the treasures of the famous Abbey, as well as the former Collegiate Church and Brunhausen Monastery.

A very special highlight is the outdoor theatre in front of the Romanesque Abbey Church, where the Gandersheim Domfestspiele takes place every summer. The Domfestspiele combines historic ambiance with contemporary theatre culture for all generations.

Just a few minutes outside the town centre you will find the health, cure and leisure area of the state-approved saline spa which has been here since founding of the spa of Gandersheim in 1878.
