Sankt Andreasberg

Municipality in the Harz National Park

The town of Sankt Andreasberg, at an elevation of 600 to 900 metres, is the highest mining town in the Harz Mountains and exudes a very special charm with its colourful wooden houses, yellow bell tower and steep mountain roads.

For hikers and nature lovers Sankt Andreasberg is a popular tourist destination thanks to its 200-kilometers long network of trails through the Harz National Park, spring flowering meadows and in summer the open position on the high sunny plateau.

The Samson Mine Museum is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Harz Water Management and offers visitors an impressive insight into the mining history of the silver ore mine on a trip down 190 metres. Among other things, visitors can admire the internationally famous wire rope ride, the last of its kind in the world and still preserved in its original form. In the gaipel of the Samson mine, the Harzer Roller Museum houses an exhibition on the Harzer Roller - a species of canary bred by the miners in the Upper Harz Mountains as a sideline.

At the visitor centre of the Harz National Park in Sankt Andreasberg visitors embark on a journey into the wilderness. The accessible interactive exhibition and in the adventure cinema takes you through time through the natural and cultural landscape of the Harz Mountains. In the exhibition "Bat Realm" visitors learn about the flying mammals and can fathom the secrets of the little hunters.

Leisure fun for young and old can be found, for example, on the 550-metre-long summer toboggan run and on the Nordic walking and mountain bike routes in beautiful natural surroundings.

A wide range of winter sports facilities makes Sankt Andreasberg a popular holiday destination in the cold months as well. In the ski centres on Matthias-Schmidt-Berg and Sonnenberg, alpine skiers and snowboard enthusiasts will find various downhill runs of varying degrees of difficulty, a freestyle run for snowboarders, two double chairlifts, several T-bar lifts and refreshment facilities. Cross-country skiers are guided through the beautiful winter landscape on the several hundred kilometre long network of trails .A large toboggan run with lighting awaits toboggan fans in the Teichtal valley of Sankt Andreasberg. A very special attraction here is the fast-paced snow-tubing facility.
