The Allstedt Castle and Palace Museum is permanently closed due to extensive conversion and renovation work until probably summer 2025!
The imposing silhouette of the Allstedt castle and palace complex rises from the southern Harz Mountains. With its unique history of construction and use and as an authentic place of work of the reformer Thomas Müntzer, it is a place of outstanding importance. An important imperial palatinate was located here from 935 to 1200. In 1524, the reformer Thomas Müntzer held his famous sermon in the court room. The main attraction of the castle complex, some of whose defensive installations are still in working order, is the late Gothic castle kitchen with one of the largest chimneys in European castle construction. In the 18th century Goethe stayed in Allstedt Castle and wrote parts of "Iphigenia" here, as can be seen in the Goethe exhibition in the castle museum. The museum is housed in the core castle. Unique historic rooms here provide the setting for cultural events, hearty knights' banquets as well as weddings and other celebrations. Also worth seeing is the extensive collection of iron art castings from Mägdesprung/Harz.
