The chess village Ströbeck has a 1.000-year-old chess tradition and houses since 2006 the only public chess museum in Germany, where children can play the outdoor chess game in the courtyard. The exhibition focuses on a chess tradition in Ströbeck with many various displays and exhibits on human chess, school chess or the artful chess board of the elector dating 1651.
Another part shows the development of the international chess and the history at the end of the 15th century, as well as the various ways of playing chess in Ströbeck and around the world. In 2009 the museum added two new showrooms. There the history of chess is presented in relations to art with many ornate and decorative pawns and players. The second room has changing special exhibitions. There is also a small chess library with a reading room and a media room, where movies and short films are shown.
