Seesen

Window to the Harz Mountains

The town of Seesen, which is over 1000 years old, lies on the western edge of the Harz Mountains and was home to several famous personalities, including Wilhelm Busch, Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg - H.E. Steinway and Louis Spohr.

The town of Seesen got its nickname from an interesting project carried out as part of a student research project.  The "Window to the Harz Mountains" is a seating furniture and information platform at a total of seven locations linked by a city tour, directing the viewer's gaze to the historical buildings and sights of the city. Through the seven windows you can see the Wilhelm Busch sculpture, the baroque St. Andrew's Church, the Municipal Museum, which, in addition to the development of can manufacturing, also presents the town's honorary citizen "William Steinway", the son of H.E. Steinway, the district court in Sehusa Castle, the 'Ratskeller', the St. Vitus Tower, the old writing school, the town house and the 'Koch'schen Hof', built in 1674.
In addition, Seesen takes its visitors to a very special place with the Wilhelm Busch House in the district of Mechtshausen. The vicarage, inhabited by the famous draughtsman and poet Wilhelm-Busch in the last 10 years of his life, offers an insight into the life and works of Busch.

Leisure and family fun is guaranteed at the Sehusa Water World with a swimming area including a diving tower, a children's pool with a magic slide and pirate ship, a saltwater pool, a bio pool, a beautiful sauna area and a large outdoor area with a sun deck, mud corner, beach sports and a small golf course.

A special highlight is the Sehusa Festival, which has taken place every year since 1975 on the first weekend in September. At this largest historical festival, which is unique in northern Germany, more than 1,000 citizens of the town dress in period costumes and perform historical scenes from Seesen's past in games and dances.

Hiking fans and sports enthusiasts get their money's worth on guided hikes, on the mini-golf course, the fit and active course in the Steinway Park or a bike tour along the large trail network of the Volksbank Arena Harz, as well as the D3 and R1 cycle routes.

The latest highlight is the Steinway Trail, a cultural-historical hiking trail that follows Steinway's footsteps between Wolfshagen and Seesen.
