Osterode am Harz

A half-timbered town with charm

Osterode is a charming half-timbered town in the Harz Mountains, nestled between the Soese water reservoir, the small national park village of Riefensbeek-Kamschlacken, the South Harz Karst mountains and the sunny Lerbach valley.

History comes alive between the old town walls. Old half-timbered houses line the idyllic old town. The ruins of the old 'Welfenburg' castle and St. Aegidien's Church tower above the town. The many half-timbered houses, churches, small cafés, restaurants and shops invite you to stroll through the city centre. A regional weekly market is held on the 'Kornmarkt' every Tuesday and Saturday morning.

The town with its districts is also a very popular holiday destination with hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers. Osterode is the gateway to the Harz Mountains and its long-distance hiking trails. The 94 km long 'Harzer-Hexen-Stieg', the 'Harzer BaudenSteig' and the 'Harzer Försterstieg' start here.

In addition, the nature discovery trail around the Sösetal dam, the Osterode municipal forest with its forest bird station, the Lerbach ironstone trail with galleries and mines and the Hanskühnenburg castle with its restaurant are waiting to be discovered. Hiking and nature enthusiasts also get their money's worth on the Karst hiking trail in the South Harz gypsum karst mountains.

In addition to the wide range of hiking opportunities, the town in the sunny southern Harz region offers a high recreational value. Nature, sport, wellness, family experiences, culture: those seeking recreation will find a multitude of unforgettable experiences here.
