Kelbra on Kyffhäuser

the friendly Auestadt

The small town Kelbra is one of the oldest settlements of the Golden Aue and lies with its districts Sittendorf and Thüringen directly on the northern slope of the Kyffhaeuser Mountains.

Even today, many sites are evidence of the long history of the town. Worth seeing, for example, are the remains of the Cistercian monastery, which was ruined in 1525, the Stork Hof, which used to be a knight residence in the 12th Century, and the St. Georgie Church, which was rebuilt and extended in 1607 and used to be a former monastery church with an altarpiece by Ch. Richter.

Due to its location directly at the Nature Park Kyffhaeuser, the town Kelbra is an ideal starting for walks and excursions around the Kyffhaeuser Mountains. A promenade, which was created in 1880, guides the visitor from the town towards the beautiful mountains. A recommendable destination is the Kyffhaeuser Monument, which is known as the second-largest site of Germany, with ruins of the old Imperial Castle Kyffhaeuser and the Barbarossa Tower. Especially adventurous is the approximately 800 metre long walk through the underground world of the Barbarossa Cave in Rottleben with its impressive stone formations. You can discover the crystal clear lakes of the “Neptune’s Cave”, the unique ceiling cloths hanging in the “Tannery”, the “Dance Hall” and much more. In the Heimkehle near Uftrungen, one of the largest gypsum karst caves of Germany, you can wander through a 2km long show cave, which includes several tunnels as well as large rooms. Furthermore, the coloured laser show is worth seeing.

The King Palace Tilleda, a fully excavated and partially reconstructed plant from the Middle-Ages which is located on the Romantic Road, is an extraordinary attraction and invites the visitor to walk on cultural historical trails.

Another highlight of the town is the Reservoir Kelbra, which measures 600 acres and offers an international camping site as well as a 10-acre bathing beach where water lovers will have plenty of fun.  During the summer, special events take place here regularly.
