Ilsenburg

National Park village on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains

The National Park municipality of Ilsenburg, with its districts of Darlingerode and Drübeck, lies on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains, at the foot of the Mount Brocken and amidst the picturesque nature of the romantic Ilse Valley.
With the most beautiful ascent of the Brocken, the 'Heinrich Heine Trail', the Harz Border Trail on the Green Belt and a well-developed yet natural network of hiking and cycling trails through the Harz National Park, as well as access to the mountain bike trail network of the 'Volksbank Arena Harz', Ilsenburg is a popular destination for recreation-seekers as well as nature and hiking enthusiasts, not least because of its healing climate.

In the two 1000-year-old monastery complexes in Ilsenburg and Drübeck, situated on the scenic route 'Romanesque Road', visitors can immerse themselves in the Romanesque period, the Middle Ages and the time of the Ottonian emperors. A visit to these buildings, which are of great architectural and cultural-historical importance, can be excellently combined with a pilgrimage along the 68-km-long monastery hiking trail from Ilsenburg to Wöltingerode and Goslar, and via Wernigerode and Blankenburg to Thale. The beautiful monastery gardens in Drübeck were included in the state project 'Garden Dreams'.

Ilsenburg offers a further cultural highlight in the form of the 'Hütten- und Technikmuseum' (museum of metallurgy and technology), which is housed in the former residence of the hereditary counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode and tells the eventful history of the town. (The museum is closed until probably the end of 2021 due to renovation work).

Leisure fun for young and old is promised by the public Kneipp facility in the romantic Ilse Valley, the lido in the forest in Darlingerode and the Harz National Park visitor centre in the Ilse Valley.
