at the foot of the Brocken
The small community of Elend lies in the High-Harz and belongs to the district of Upper Harz by Brocken.
Elend enjoys a quiet and relaxing location with unspoilt nature, away from the noise of big cities and close to the legendary Brocken.
As a stop on the historic steam locomotives of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways visitors will get plenty of chances to observe these amazing trains on their way to the Brocken.
Also worth seeing is the landmark of the town, Smallest Wooden Church in Germany. The church is a timber-frame building erected in 1897, with a small size 5 by 11 meters, and 80 seats. The wooden altar of the church is set on rollers for space reasons.
On hot days, the local outdoor pool provides a beautiful, wooded area to cool down for both the young and old; with a swimming pool, water slide, kiddie pool, beach volleyball and lawn, it provides lots of water fun and relaxation.
The beautiful natural surroundings, a well-developed network of hiking trails and the direct location of the Brocken as well as the long-distance walking trail, Harzer-Hexen-Stieg passing close by, makes Elend a popular holiday destination for hikers.
In winter Elend welcomes its visitors with well groomed network of cross-country ski-trails in a beautiful snowy landscape. For more information, see here!
