health resort by the Brocken
Benneckenstein is a small district of the Upper Harz, near the Brocken. It is located on a plateau in the centre of the Harz, untouched by the noise of large streets, surrounded by lush meadows and beautiful pine forests.
An extensive network of trails allows hikers and nature lovers to enjoy the beautiful unspoilt pristine nature of the Harz and wonderful views over vast meadows.
Among the many attractions in Benneckenstein is the Train Station Museum, which gives railway enthusiasts an insight into the history of the 1899 inaugurated Narrow Gauge Railway of the Harz, the History Museum with an exhibition on cultural history and traditions, old crafts and an extensive exhibition of East German cars. Of course, you will have a chance to get a glimpse of the real steam train of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway, with its stop at Benneckenstein, on its way to Mount Brocken.
Equally interesting are the St. Laurentius Church, built in 1852, the Werckmeister-House; the oldest house in town and home to the famous organist and music theorist Andreas Werckmeister, and the historic and well-preserved half-timbered building "Freiheit” (freedom).
The indoor leisure pool offers plenty of fun for all ages (Freizeithallenbad Harzbad) with a large swimming pool, children's area, outdoor slide and sauna area, plus a large recreation hall where you can play badminton, bowling, tennis (indoor and outdoor), and go to the gym or sauna.
Since 1991, Benneckstein has been presenting one of the highlights of the Harz; the annual Sled Dog Race. This international race with pedigree racing sled dogs, the Huskies, is classed as one of the greatest in the Harz.
During winter, Benneckenstein offers an extensive cross- country trail network and a beautiful snowy landscape. More information can be found here!
