Ilfeld - holiday on the sunny side of the Harz
The small, state-approved recreation resort Ilfeld is surrounded by colourful mixed forests and legendary rock in the Ilfelder Valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in the southern Harz.
The city boasts an historic town centre with many half half-timbered houses and the St. George- Mary Church, which was modelled after a medieval-gothic hall, and was built in place of the demolished St. Georges Church.
Hikers and nature lovers will discover along the historical and national hiking and biking trails; the Karst Trail, the Old Post Road, the Kaiserweg, impressive natural wonders, rock formations and a diverse geology. Popular attractions here are the ruins of Ilburg on Castle Hill and the Poppenberg, a 600 meter high, tree-covered mountain with a 33 meter high observation tower on the summit which gives magnificent views over the landscape of the south Harz.
In the towns' long history of mining and smelting; Ilfeld is alive again. The World Mining Experience Rabensteiner tunnel is the only coal mine in the Harz, and gives a fascinating glimpse into the underground workings. The ride on the "Rabenstein Express", the use of air-powered machinery and the bicycle trolley at the mine here are just a few highlights of the interesting tour. In the Copper Shale mine "Lang wand" you can learn about the geology and mining technology of copper shale in the southern Harz. The copper ore and manganese trail provides interesting information.
As part of the historic Harz Narrow-gauge railway, the town has to offer its guests a further highlight.
The Local History Museum, collection of minerals are in the same building; the former Premonstratensians Monastery, the mineral-rich healing source and open during the summer months, forest pool round off some of the excellent facilities that Ilfeld has to offer.
